Breast cancer has been a disease that is frightened by many women. Although some men can also be caught by this breast cancer. We have heard about breast cancer many times as the disease has been a famous one, but not any of us know the signs of this disease. To get to know and prevent this disease it is better the get regular breast exams. For those who want to know more about breast cancer checkups and diagnosis, this article will show them.

What is breast cancer?

Besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the leading cancer type among women. But, it does not mean men can't get caught with the disease. Breast cancer can be seen as a group of cancerous cells. They are known as a malignant tumor that initiates in the cells of the breast and it can potentially extend into other areas of our body. 

The signs that point to breast cancer commonly occurred with the swelling breast, irritation of the skin, feeling the pain, the reddish or redness on the breast, and also the discharge of nipple. However, most women at the very beginning of the breast cancer stage experiencing no symptoms at all. 

That is why it can be considered important to have a clinical breast exam at least once a year. It is good news if no abnormal things are being found. But, in the worst case after this exam, there will be other tests being performed.

How breast cancer diagnosed?

Several tests are done to diagnose breast problems. Some of them are breast ultrasound, diagnostic mammogram, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and biopsy. Ultrasound is a machine that uses the sound waves to make detailed images or pictures, which is called sonograms, of areas within the breast. The second one is the diagnostic mammogram.

This procedure to diagnose the problem that is found in the breast, for instance, lumps. Besides, when an area of the breast looks weird or pretty abnormal on the process of mammogram screening, doctors will have the patient to get a diagnostic mammogram. This procedure is the more detailed X-ray of the breast. The third is Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) that is a body scan using a magnet linked to a computer having a function to make detailed pictures of areas inside the breast.

The last one is a biopsy that is a test that can remove the tissue or fluid from the breast to be looked at under a microscope and do more testing. There are some kinds of biopsies such as fine-needle aspiration, core biopsy, and open biopsy.

Finding the cancer cells

If finally breast cancer is diagnosed, staging is then done to find out the cancer cells whether they have spread within the breast or to other parts of the body. Doing staging can find whether the cancer is only in the breast, or the lymph nodes under the arm, or outside the breast. It can define the stage of breast cancer.
